(Yes, named after Billie Holiday!)
2026 has already started in the most unexpected and magical way, and this week brought something into my life that I still can’t quite believe is real.
I have dreamt of owning my own upright piano for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my parents always had one in the house, and I was completely captivated by the way the sound resonated through the room - warm, rich, and alive. It’s a sound that has stayed with me ever since.
At the start of this year, I made a promise to myself to spend time each day developing my music theory and piano skills. I’ve been practising daily on a small MIDI keyboard while also stepping into a new chapter as Musical Director for a Big Band. Investing in a proper keyboard or piano was already high on my bucket list for 2026.
Then, on Thursday, the universe stepped in.
While scrolling Instagram, I saw a post from a local café in Southend-on-Sea looking to re-home an upright piano...for free. I genuinely did a double take. I messaged immediately, and just like that…she was mine.
Billie arrived this morning thanks to two wonderful friends who kindly collected and delivered her to our flat (huge love to Alvin & Will!). I’ve spent the best part of the day cleaning, scrubbing, polishing and getting to know her properly. She’s missing a couple of keys (they still work!) and she definitely needs tuning, but honestly, I couldn’t be more in love.
A massive thank you to Utopia Coffee Lounge for trusting me to re-home and care for this beautiful instrument. You have no idea how much this piano is going to shape my musical journey, my writing, and my growth this year.
My wife loves her. Doris the dog loves her. And I already know I’m going to write some very special music on her.
Feeling incredibly grateful, inspired, and excited for everything that’s ahead.
Here’s to new beginnings, new music, and a very happy Friday. ✨
